Assembly elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir in September 2024 but the promised Statehood which the Union Government had assured to the Supreme Court is yet to be restored.
On Wednesday, July 23, 2025, Surinder Kumar Choudhary, Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, expressed his concerns over the recent terror attack in Pahalgam saying that Jammu and Kashmir has been under Union government control for last 11 years.
“How did Baisaran incident in Pahalgam happen? How Pulwama attack in 2019 happened? Why corruption has not been eradicated? This is the same government which took away our Statehood and has been in charge of J&K for over a decade,” Mr. Choudhary said during a public gathering titled “Statehood Now” organized by The Forum for Human Rights in Jammu and Kashmir.
On April 22, 26 civilians were killed in a terror attack at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam and the perpetrators are still at large.
Farooq Abdullah, former Chief Minister of J&K and president of National Conference, urged the “silent majority” to demand Statehood for Jammu and Kashmir.
While discussing the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar, Mr. Abdullah said, “You are disenfranchising Muslims, Dalits and Adivasis in Bihar. Where is the India of Gandhi? They see us through the prism of religion and language. This is not the India I want. I want an India where we coexist as individuals, regardless of our religion, language or region. Those in power expect us to beg; we are not here to beg. We demand Statehood,” he said.
Congress MP Manish Tewari commented on the Supreme Court’s verdict saying that it essentially means the method used to revoke Article 370 was flawed but the revocation itself was correct. “This is a strange notion and I am not making this up. This is the Supreme Court’s judgment which I have read,” Mr. Tewari said.Sajjad Kargili of Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) said Ladakh has been “betrayed and disenfranchised”. “J&K Reorganisation Act must be repealed; our land is in danger,” Mr. Kargili said.
The special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Constitution was abrogated by Parliament on August 5, 2019 and the State was divided into two Union Territories: Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Despite Assembly elections in Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir scheduled in September 2024, the promised Statehood which the Union Government had assured to the Supreme Court is yet to be restored.
G.K. Pillai, former Union Home Secretary, said the Supreme Court should have taken a stand on Statehood instead of leaving it to the government.
